Information regarding practicing as a PA in the UK

Many who have trained in medicine have shown an interest in joining the UK Association of Physician Assistants.  In order to join UKAPA as a physician assistant, you must be a graduate of an approved physician assistant or UK medical care practitioner program, the same requirement one must have to practice as a physician assistant in the UK. Graduation from a medical school, in any country, does not qualify an individual to become a physician assistant. One cannot simply use their previous medical training, regardless of depth of that training, to become a PA and practice in the UK, or in the USA.

We do, however, have appropriate membership categories for physicians (physician member) or affiliate membership for those from health professions that choose to be part of the organization.

If you meet the qualifications of a physician assistant as defined in the bylaws as "graduate of nationally recognized physician assistant program including those accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARCPA) or its successor agency, or by one of its predecessor agencies [Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)], or who has passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying examination (PANCE) administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or the British Equivalents to any of those above,." then you are welcome into our ranks as a physician assistant.

For further information on becoming a physician assistant, please use the links page to contact the listed UK Universities, which are those most likely to have a PA training program, or contact the American Academy of Physician Assistants.

Categories of Membership:

A fellow member (£50 for 1 year and £100 for 3 year membership) is a physician assistant who is a graduate of nationally recognized physician assistant program including those accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARCPA) or its successor agency, or by one of its predecessor agencies [Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)], or who has passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying examination (PANCE) administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) or the British Equivalents to any of those above. To maintain their membership status, fellow members must satisfy such continuing medical and/or medically related educational requirements as may be prescribed by the Membership through the Board of Directors. Non-clinical physician assistants will not be required to maintain continuing medical education (CME). Fellow members shall vote for officers and directors and be eligible to hold office.

A student member (£10 for 1 year) is an individual who is enrolled in an approved physician assistant program, or a program of education established in the UK or other country to produce a practitioner with comparable competencies, duties, and responsibilities of the American Physician Assistant, provided that the training program includes physician and physician assistant instructors, preceptors and/or mentors, and trains in the medical model. Student members will neither be allowed to vote nor hold office. Notwithstanding the preceding sentence, one UK student shall be elected by his/her peers to sit on the Board of Directors and shall have and enjoy all rights and privileges of any such member of the board.

Affiliate members (£40 for one year) shall consist of individuals approved by the membership from the health professions who desire to associate with the Association. Affiliate members will not be entitled to vote or to hold office, but shall be entitled to privileges of the floor.

Sustaining members (£40 for one year) shall consist of physician assistant program graduates who have chosen not to actively practice in the profession and opt to be classified as sustaining members. Sustaining members shall be entitled to privileges of the floor, but shall not be entitled to vote or hold office.

Physician members (£40 for one year) shall consist of licensed physicians who desire to associate with the Association. Physician members shall not be entitled to vote or hold office.

Associate members (£40 for one year) shall consist of representatives of businesses engaged in selling products or services to physician assistants or individuals employed by government agencies who do not qualify for any other membership category. Associate members are not entitled vote or hold office.
