AAPA President Stephen Hanson and UKAPA 2010 Conference Attendees
The UK physician assistant scene is expanding as was evidenced this past weekend in Woburn where 60+ people attended the conference, and the majority in attendance were UK physician assistants or students.
UKAPA was honoured to have the President of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, Stephen Hanson, MPAS, PA-C, address the conference on Saturday, 27 March 2010. Mr. Hanson spoke of his recent visit to the White House on the 3rd of March 2010 where he had the opportunity to meet and stand alongside President Obama during a speech on health care reform as a representative of the PA profession.
Updates on the experiences of two recently graduated UK PAs were provided as well. Lori Williams, graduate of the University of Hertfordshire's programme spoke of her experience working in a GP-led health clinic in Peckham. UKAPA Director-at-large, Susan Collett, spoke of her experience working in cardiology for the past several months. American trained PAs also provided an overview of their current working situation. Kirsten Gipson, UKAPA President, reported on her experiences in Birmingham's City Hospital Accident and Emergency Department where she has worked for the past five years. Appointed in December 2009, PA Robyn Zicker reported on her experience working as the first surgical orthopaedic PA in England at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in the Foot and Ankle unit. American PA and UKAPA Director-at-large, Michael Ulm, spoke of his experience working in general practice with a dual role of clinical PA and practice manager. Presentations from the aforementioned and additional speakers will be available online shortly.
